Attribute

Describe the attributes (i.e., fields or variables) of this file. An attribute is often the column header in a tabular data file.

Attribute Name

The name of the attribute as it appears in the data. It is usually found in the column header of a tabular data table.

Example: “species,” “site,” "temp"

Attribute Label

Label this attribute with a descriptive display name.

Example: an attribute might have the attribute name ‘Temp_P2’ and a corresponding attribute label ‘Temperature, probe 2.’

Definition

Define this attribute (i.e. variable). Be as specific and complete as possible so the data can be interpreted and reused by other scientists not familiar with your research or field of study.

Example: ‘Water temperature in degrees Kelvin, measured with the backup of two [manufacturer name] probes.
